magnesium treatment

On my now page I wrote I want to do a magnesium treatment. I'm planning on starting it this week.

There's several reasons I want to do the treatment: it could help with my fibromyalgia and hypermobility syndrome and help reducing headaches and migraines. I want to test if a treatment lowers my symptoms.

research on magnesium and fibromyalgia

Several studies have investigated the relationship between magnesium levels and fibromyalgia symptoms.

magnesium deficiency: Research has shown that individuals with fibromyalgia may have lower levels of magnesium in their bodies compared to those without the condition. This deficiency may contribute to the development and severity of fibromyalgia symptoms.

muscular pain relief: Magnesium has been found to have analgesic properties, meaning it can help alleviate pain. Studies have shown that magnesium supplementation may reduce muscle pain and tenderness in individuals with fibromyalgia.

how magnesium can help relieve symptoms

The potential benefits of magnesium for fibromyalgia relief can be attributed to its various physiological functions.

alleviate symptoms

muscle relaxation: Magnesium plays a crucial role in muscle relaxation, and supplementing with magnesium may help reduce muscle pain, stiffness, and spasms commonly experienced by individuals with fibromyalgia.

central nervous system regulation: Magnesium is involved in the regulation of neurotransmitters and the nervous system. By improving neurotransmitter activity, magnesium supplementation may help reduce pain perception and improve overall nerve function in fibromyalgia patients.

sleep regulation: Magnesium supports healthy sleep patterns and may help individuals with fibromyalgia who struggle with insomnia or disrupted sleep. By promoting relaxation and improving sleep quality, magnesium supplementation can contribute to better-rested individuals and potentially reduce fibromyalgia symptoms.

mood stabilization: The potential mood-enhancing effects of magnesium may be beneficial for individuals with fibromyalgia who experience depression or anxiety. By supporting neurotransmitter balance and reducing stress, magnesium supplementation may improve overall emotional well-being.

different types of magnesium

When considering magnesium supplementation for fibromyalgia relief, it’s important to understand that different forms of magnesium offer varying benefits and absorption rates. Here, we will explore some of the most common types of magnesium and their specific advantages.

types of magnesium
magnesium citrate: Magnesium citrate is a popular form of magnesium due to its high absorption rate. It is easily absorbed by the body and has a gentle laxative effect, making it beneficial for individuals who may also experience constipation alongside their fibromyalgia symptoms. Magnesium citrate may help relieve muscle pain, promote relaxation, and support healthy bowel movements.

magnesium oxide: Magnesium oxide is another commonly available form of magnesium. While it has a lower absorption rate compared to magnesium citrate, it still offers benefits for individuals with fibromyalgia. Magnesium oxide is often used to address magnesium deficiencies and may help relieve muscle cramps and promote overall muscle health.

magnesium glycinate: Magnesium glycinate is a highly bioavailable form of magnesium. It is bound to glycine, an amino acid known for its calming effects. This combination makes magnesium glycinate beneficial for individuals with fibromyalgia who experience muscle pain, tension, and anxiety. It may help promote relaxation, improve sleep quality, and reduce muscle stiffness.

magnesium malate: Magnesium malate is a form of magnesium that is bonded with malic acid. This combination is particularly beneficial for individuals with fibromyalgia, as malic acid has been found to help reduce muscle pain and fatigue. Magnesium malate may improve energy levels, alleviate muscle discomfort, and support overall well-being.

headaches & migraines

Unfortunately, I suffer from headaches and migraines regularly. Most of them I can keep 'under control', which means I can take painkillers and still make it through the day.

There's a few times a year where it gets so bad that I have to lie down in a dark bedroom and hope for the best, when no painkiller in the world does anything anymore.

I'm eager to find out if a (regular) magnesium treatment will have an effect on my headaches and migraines.

What I've found so far on the topic migraines and magnesium:
More than 50% of migraine sufferers have a magnesium deficiency. Sufficient magnesium is important for migraine sufferers because it improves stress resistance, counteracts blood vessel spasms, improves hormone balance, and reduces the brain's sensitivity to migraines.

Let's see what I can report after the treatment. I hope it will reduce symptoms! If you have information about this topic that could be valuable for me, have any questions or want to talk about it, you can write me.
